January 17, 2025 – The Thunder Bay Community Economic Development Commission (CEDC) is pleased to announce its selection to participate in the Regional Economic Development through Immigration (REDI) pilot, a new initiative from the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD). This pilot is designed to bolster economic immigration in select communities outside the Greater Toronto Area.
“Our government is proud to support the Thunder Bay community with the launch of the Regional Economic Development through Immigration (REDI) pilot,” said David Piccini, Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. “This initiative will not only empower local employers to attract and retain skilled workers but will also drive long-term economic growth and stability in Thunder Bay. By ensuring our communities have the talent they need to thrive, we are building a stronger Ontario together.”
The REDI pilot aims to support local employers by enhancing their ability to attract and retain skilled workers, addressing critical workforce shortages, and fostering long-term economic change. Through this opportunity, participating employers will have the ability to help new or existing employees secure permanent residence, further solidifying their workforce and contributing to the stability of the regional economy.
Running until December 31st, 2025, the REDI pilot will serve the Thunder Bay Census Metropolitan Area (CMA). As part of this initiative, the CEDC has been awarded up to 200 nominations through the Ontario Immigration Nominee Program (OINP’s) Employer Job Offer Stream. These nominations are a vital resource for local employers looking to fill or retain skilled positions and meet growing demands.
“We are incredibly honoured to be selected to administer the REDI pilot in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development,” says Jamie Taylor, CEO, of CEDC. “This opportunity is a great benefit to Thunder Bay. By dedicating nominations specifically to our community, we are not only supporting employers in meeting their workforce needs, but also enhancing our region’s overall economic vitality. Through this pilot, we can continue to attract and retain the skilled talent essential to driving growth and ensuring the long-term prosperity of Thunder Bay.”
The CEDC would also like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Thunder Bay City Council for their support in our application for the REDI pilot. Their leadership and commitment to economic development have played a key role in making this opportunity a reality for our community.
In the coming weeks, the CEDC will release further details about the pilot, including how to apply, eligibility, information workshops schedule, and pathways to connect with the MLITSD Immigration Promotion and Employer Outreach team. Employers and interested parties are encouraged to follow the CEDC’s channels for updates and notifications.
