Sudbury mine-tech projects share $2M in federal funds
Three ground-breaking initiatives in Sudbury are getting a big boost from the federal government.
Each recipient will use their share of roughly $2 million in funding to “develop projects focusing on the commercialization of mining technologies that will make the mining sector more productive and sustainable and that will strengthen our economy,” according to a release.
The investments, totalling $2,060,027, were announced earlier this week by local Liberal MPs Viviane Lapointe and Marc Serre.The funds come through the Mining Innovation Commercialization Accelerator network, established two years ago, and are being split between MIRARCO, Symboticware and RIINO. The first is an applied research firm developing an eco-friendly way to extract minerals from tailings, while the latter are both local companies advancing new technologies in mining communication and material transport.
“The growing demand for critical minerals presents a generational opportunity for the Canadian mining industry,” the government said in a release. “As we move toward a low-carbon economy, large amounts of minerals such as graphite, copper, lithium, and nickel will be needed to power the green and digital economy at home and around the world.”
MIRARCO — the acronym stands for Mining Innovation Rehabilitation and Applied Research Corporation — is getting $287,027 to continue its work on a bioleaching process to extract battery metals, nickel and cobalt from tailings.The funding will be used “to support the recruitment of personnel, infrastructure developments, and piloting of the BacTech process using pyrrhotite tailings from Vale,” according to the release. “The research is supported by industry partners Vale, and SME BacTech Environmental.”

Symboticware is receiving $1 million to advance its “software solution for mining powered by satellite connectivity, such as SpaceX,” the government said. “The main project activities include the development of the cutting-edge Industrial Internet of Things device for industrial vehicles used in mining, capable of processing data right on the spot and transmitting it through satellite networks to minimize connectivity costs,” as well as development of AI models to predict potential equipment failure, and piloting the product at mine sites in Ontario, Quebec and Nunavut.
