Wabi Iron & Steel Corp.: 118 Years of Innovation in Mining
Presenter: Stan Gorzalczynski
Founded in 1907 in New Liskeard, Wabi Iron & Steel Corp. began as a repair shop for local sawmills and steamships. Its early success came from producing longer-lasting stamp mill dies for the booming Cobalt silver camp, earning the support of local mine owners and leading to the company’s permanent home at 330 Broadwood Avenue.
Over the past century, Wabi has been a pioneer in mining technology, from advanced wear-resistant metallurgy to the introduction of aluminum hoist cages, rubber-tired haulage trucks, and large-capacity mine cages. Wabi’s legacy reflects Canada’s leadership in mining innovation, and its story is one of resilience and adaptation in an industry dominated by global giants.
