For her part, McGee is highly involved in community projects that have included such commitments as memberships in the Order of Eastern Star, Sudbury and Sunrisers Rotary Clubs, the membership committee of the Greater Sudbury Chamber of Commerce as well as the Suomi and Capreol Lion’s Clubs. For the past 10 years, she has been on the planning committee for a 128-bed nursing home in Sudbury East, an ongoing commitment. She is also a pastoral/palliative care provider and has worked at the Elgin Street mission serving meals over the years. She was also a volunteer firefighter/first responder with the Estaire/Wanup Fire Department.
With regard to future opportunities for her company and the mining industry in northern Ontario, McGee sees Northern Ontario as the continuing mecca of hard rock mining with endless opportunities for growth especially in the development of mining technology that is sold globally. Base-metal mines in Northern Ontario have high operating costs which must be reduced to survive. Also as our mines are 2-3 km below surface, they are very hot; going deeper will therefore be too hot for human operators. These two conditions will drive our mines and those in other jurisdictions towards completely autonomous equipment. Production systems will therefore become all-electric, digitally controlled, continuous conveying systems. Because we have some of the most innovative mining service and supply companies in the world, Northern Ontario has become and will continue to be a centre for development of the new productive, sustainable mines of the future. By working together we will drive the solutions necessary to keep our companies strong and competitive in both domestic and global markets.
Junkala believes that when Dick Destefano created SAMSSA, now MineConnect, the vision was born.
