Manitoba has the potential to become a key hub in the production of lithium, a metal required for electric vehicle batteries, the province’s trade minister Jeff Wharton said as the region attempts to attract more miners through a newly released critical minerals strategy.
“We definitely have (an) abundance of lithium,” he said. “We are getting calls on folks looking to Manitoba for that particular critical mineral because we know we need it and we need to get it out of the ground and manufacture right here in Manitoba.”
That abundance of lithium could “absolutely” make the province a key source of the critical mineral in Canada, he said.
