Zeeshan Syed M.Sc., President, Avalon Advanced Materials Inc.
Creating a lithium supply chain in Ontario
Avalon Advanced Materials will be the first mover in creating a vertically integrated lithium supply chain in Ontario. Avalon will connect its own, as well as regional, mineral resources from the northwest with EV battery and other manufacturing customers in the south through a planned lithium processing facility in Thunder Bay. Having already purchased local industrial land that is fit for this purpose, Avalon will leverage Thunder Bay’s strategic location as a bridge between north and south in order to support Ontario’s Critical Minerals Strategy.
Mr. Syed is a graduate of the London School of Economics with a Masters degree in Comparative Politics and Economics, and has close to twenty years of multi-sector executive leadership experience. He has deep expertise as an international business development leader, climate change negotiator, nonprofit founder, and natural resources regulator, providing him a unique perspective of a global economy and energy system increasingly marked by volatility and transition. He is credited with helping governments, institutional investors, multinational corporations and stakeholders understand how political factors shape energy markets and investment decisions.
Prior to joining Avalon in 2019, Mr. Syed was focused on public-private partnerships and management in public service, the nonprofit sector, and politics. He has served in the Office of the Prime Minister in Canada, with the Government of Alberta and with the United Nations Secretariat.
