Dynamic, modern, and highly learner-centred, Lakehead University acknowledges all of our students as valued leaders of tomorrow, whose education and success are most paramount to our institution. Both campuses in Thunder Bay and Orillia promise the total university experience: a blend of academic excellence and opportunity with a rich variety of social and recreational activities. We also promise excellence in research; Lakehead is the proud host to 11 Canada Research Chairs, the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Mining and Exploration (CESME) and our Biorefining Research Institute.
The goal of the Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Mining and Exploration is to encourage and support research, education and outreach activities regarding the nature and impacts of mineral resource exploration and extraction particularly in Northern Ontario.
The Office of Innovation, Partnerships and Economic Development (IPED) is an intellectual property resource for faculty, staff, and students, and an important priority for Lakehead University. We strive to encourage, support, and enhance the commercialization of intellectual property and assist its researchers in transferring knowledge and technology to those outside the University community. Critical to these goals are the development and maintenance of research and business partnerships, which include industry, government, and other Universities.
In 2023, Research Infosource named Lakehead the number three university in Canada in the undergraduate category of its annual Research University of the Year assessment.
Lakehead was ranked in the top spot from 2015 to 2019 — the first time an institution in Research Infosource’s undergraduate category was ever ranked Research University of the Year five years in a row.
