On September 12, 2024, WCTR Northern Welding Academy and JRS College of Business & Healthcare hosted a successful Open House Networking Event in Sudbury, marking the region’s biggest networking gala to date. The event brought together industry leaders, educators, and community members to discuss the future of healthcare and mining trades in Northern Ontario.
Dignitaries, including Mayor Paul Lefebvre of Greater Sudbury and MPP Ontario Jamie West, were in attendance, emphasizing the importance of fostering growth in Northern Ontario’s skilled trades. Mayor Lefebvre stated, “I believe in the promising future of the welding sector and the skilled trades in Greater Sudbury and Northern Ontario. Events like this not only showcase our commitment to workforce development but also highlight the collaborative spirit needed to drive our local economy forward.”
JRS College expressed excitement about bringing the Personal Support Worker (PSW) program to Sudbury, recognizing the vital role healthcare professionals play in addressing workforce shortages in the region.
Representatives from local institutions, including Georgian College, Cambrian College, and Laurentian University, attended to support workforce development.
The event also featured a convocation ceremony celebrating graduates from the welding program. MPP Ontario Jamie West remarked on the importance of women in trades, stating, “Seeing women excel in the skilled trades is not only inspiring but essential for the future of our workforce.”
The Open House highlighted the critical role that skilled trades, particularly in welding and healthcare, play in addressing workforce shortages in Northern Ontario. By fostering partnerships among educational institutions and industry leaders, the event aimed to create pathways for students to thrive in their careers.
