FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Thunder Bay, ON, March 20, 2025 – TBT Engineering Limited (TBTE), Northwestern Ontario’s largest employee-owned multi-disciplinary engineering firm, is pleased to announce two major expansion initiatives that will enhance services and significantly grow its provincial footprint.
Marking its 30th year in business, TBTE now has five offices located in Thunder Bay, Fort Frances, Kenora, Collingwood and Ottawa. As of this February they have merged with LBE Group Inc. in Kenora and opened a new branch office in Ottawa.
After three decades, these strategic moves reinforce TBTE’s continued growth and expertise in Ontario. The merger with LBE Group Inc. will bring 15 more professionals into the TBTE team, adding to its existing strengths in Structural, Mechanical, Electrical and Civil Engineering. The Ottawa expansion will expand TBTE’s capabilities in Environmental and Geotechnical Engineering while bringing on new expertise in the fields of Hydrogeological services and Geoenvironmental Instrumentation and Monitoring.
“Since day one, our vision and drive has always been to highlight the expertise and innovation that exists within Ontario,” says Scott Peterson, President of TBTE. “These expansion initiatives will increase TBTE’s ability to deliver high-quality engineering solutions throughout Ontario at a time when Ontario driven solutions will be more important than ever.”
These moves build on TBTE’s successful acquisition of Profor Engineering in 2015, Sostratus Engineering in 2016 and EXP’s Northwestern Ontario Geomatics Operations in 2017. The expansion into Collingwood in 2023 opened the path forward into the Southern Ontario market and the new office that just opened in Ottawa demonstrates the firm’s interest in further growth opportunities throughout the province. “Investing in new locations, people, and expertise is the natural next step in our journey,” continues Peterson.
These initiatives will allow the firm to serve clients across a broader geographic area and through additional service lines making the “One Stop Shop” experience even more enhanced for current and future clients, at a critical time when Ontario developments will be relying on improved productivity and effectiveness in the development of new infrastructure and industries to meet current market challenges.
What began as a small materials testing lab with just two lab technicians in Thunder Bay in 1995, has grown into an award-winning, employee-owned company, with a core workforce of 150 employees and intentions to continue to grow in the near future. “Looking back, there was never a master plan, just a strong motivation to attract people with complementary skills and a commitment to quality and client satisfaction,” continued Peterson.
TBTE remains dedicated to supporting our First Nation partners and clients across various sectors, including mining, energy, and infrastructure projects as well as land development, Institutional, Commercial and Industrial (ICI) initiatives.
“With these expansions, TBTE is now a provincial firm, and as we look to the future, TBTE remains committed to the company’s independent roots and Northern identity, while continuing to evolve,” says Peterson. “We’ve made it a priority to grow in a way that keeps us connected to the North because that’s where our story started, but we recognize the opportunity to grow into new markets at this critically important time in our history as a company and a nation.”
TBTE will continue to celebrate 30 successful years in business over the next few months with community events, staff highlights and features on key projects and partners.
