After years of research and development in Sudbury, a water-monitoring device that can transmit real-time data from lakes, rivers and industrial sites is set to enter the market this summer.
Charles Ramcharan, founder of Tunik, created the Dolphin system, a compact, autonomous water-monitoring platform designed to continuously monitor water quality water levels, flow and other environmental conditions from any waterbody on Earth. The system can be deployed virtually anywhere, collect data in real time and send that information directly to a user’s phone or web portal.
What makes the technology unique is its ability to stand up to harsh conditions, its portable size and advanced environmental sensors.
“Climate change is upon us, and we need to have much better information about the environment in real time,” said Ramcharan, an aquatic ecologist and professor emeritus at Laurentian University.
Frustrated with the devices and systems in place, where information is most often recorded on a clipboard, Ramcharan set out to make water quality data as easily accessible as weather on a phone.
