Researchers at Lakehead University are embarking on a five-year, $2.5-million project toward mineral exploration in an effort to speed up and streamline mine development in northwestern Ontario.
The Thunder Bay university announced it’s establishing the Lakehead University – NOHFC Industrial Research Chair in Mineral Exploration, which will be held by Dr. Peter Hollings, a professor and chair of Lakehead’s Department of Geology.
Hollings will work with Kinross Gold Corp. to “better understand the gold resources at their Great Bear Project near Red Lake, while also finding new, economically viable mineral deposits to support the development of new mines,” Lakehead said in a news release.
Of the funding, $1 million from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corp. (NOHFC) will support the research chair position, while an additional $440,948 will come from FedNor, which will be used toward a new, state-of-the-art microanalytical research lab.
Kinross Gold Corp. is contributing $500,000 to the project, which will be used to help train five new graduate student positions, two postdoctoral fellows, and 15 fieldwork assistants, as well as materials, fieldwork, and travel costs.
