Vancouver mine builder First Mining Gold has reached collaborative agreements with a trio of First Nation communities on the way to advancing its Springpole gold mine project in northwestern Ontario.
In two news releases this week, the company said it’s entered into project agreements with Cat Lake, Lac Seul and Slate Falls First Nations.
Through these consultation and benefits agreements, the company and the communities are taking a collaborative approach to develop Springpole through the start-to-finish mining cycle of construction, mine operations and closure. First Mining Gold said development will take place in a manner that respects the environment and will provide direct benefits to the communities.
First Mining Gold has yet to officially make a construction decision to build a mine. Springpole stands to one of the largest open-pit gold mines in Canada.
The $1.5-billion open-pit project is situated 110 kilometres northeast of Red Lake. Springpole is forecasted to produce 300,000 ounces of gold over a nine-and-half year operating life. A bay on a lake will be drained to access the gold and silver deposit beneath the lake bed.
