Revitalizing the Haileybury School of Mines has clearly been a passion project for Jamie Johnston.
During Timmins Mining Week, her employer, Northern College, dropped the news that the hallowed school has undergone a facelift in its curriculum and educational offerings to feature a more industry-relevant look and to restore its legendary lustre. A big emphasis is being placed on incorporating the latest and greatest technology used in the field.
“I am so excited,” said Johnson, Northern College’s dean of trades and technology. “We’ve done so much work in the last year.
“I’m from the North, I love the North, I want people to stay in the North, and we want to do everything we can to support our mining partners and the mining sector.”
Founded in 1912, HSM became a world-renowned school for producing highly skilled and competent mining experts whose graduates have been impactful around the globe. The school was folded into Northern College in 1960.
For many graduates in the Canadian and global mining industry, the Haileybury school is a point of pride. And they felt the program had been stagnating.
