Marathon Mayor Rick Dumas expects this fall’s start of construction for Generation Mining’s Marathon copper-platinum mine will have a widespread impact across his community and the north shore of Lake Superior.
The Toronto mine developer announced Sept. 14 that it’s fully cashed up to $1.3-billion to begin building its open-pit mine, north of town, in this year’s fourth quarter.
“It’s going to be huge benefit to the region,” said Dumas. “This is a solid story and we’ve been waiting for it to be announced. I’m so excited.”
The deposit is located 10 kilometres north of the town centre, just off the Trans-Canada Highway and a stone’s throw from the local airport runway.
Marathon has always been a bedroom community for the Hemlo gold mine, 35 kilometres east of town. But this time, they’ll have a major mining operation within its municipal boundaries, making it eligible for taxation.
