MineConnect recently attended an open house at MIRARCO Mining Innovation’s Centre for Mine Waste Biotechnology, where we learned how biotechnology could help the mining industry recover valuable materials from mine waste while reducing long-term environmental liabilities.
During the tour, the MIRARCO team explained how bioleaching uses naturally occurring microorganisms to break down mineral-bearing material. Inside controlled reactors, the process can help recover metals such as copper, nickel and cobalt from tailings that might otherwise remain in storage, while also separating and treating iron-bearing materials. Rather than viewing tailings only as an environmental liability, MIRARCO’s research explores how they can become a secondary source of valuable minerals.
A key strength of the facility is its ability to move promising technologies beyond small laboratory experiments and into pilot-scale testing. New mining technologies do not move from an idea to commercial use overnight. Research and development, scale-up testing and de-risking are essential steps in determining whether a process can operate safely, effectively and economically at an industrial scale. MIRARCO is building the expertise and infrastructure needed to help companies move through that process before committing to full-scale deployment.
MIRARCO is currently advancing work involving pyrrhotite tailings, with the goal of recovering nickel, cobalt and copper while finding productive uses for the remaining material. For mining companies, this work could improve resource efficiency, reduce the amount of material returned to storage and support the management of long-term environmental liabilities. It also demonstrates that biotechnology is not only an environmental tool—it has the potential to strengthen critical-mineral supply chains and recover value from material that has already been mined.
The facility also creates opportunities for mining suppliers and technology companies. Scaling these processes will require expertise in reactor design, automation, instrumentation, process control, material handling, engineering, water treatment and analytical services. As a not-for-profit research organization, MIRARCO works with organizations ranging from SMEs to major mining companies and offers different models of engagement, including collaborative research, technology development, intellectual-property licensing and other commercial arrangements.
MIRARCO is expanding its capacity, training highly skilled people and welcoming new industry partners. The open house highlighted what can be achieved when researchers, mining companies, suppliers, funders and technology developers work together to address shared challenges.
