Cambrian College’s Centre for Smart Mining gets $1-million boost
Sudbury MP Viviane Lapointe announced Friday a federal funding of just over $1 million for Cambrian College’s Centre for Smart Mining, a move aimed at strengthening Northern Ontario’s leadership in mining innovation and sustainability.
The funding, delivered through FedNor’s Regional Economic Growth Through Innovation Fund, will support the Centre’s expansion over the next three years. Lapointe made the announcement on behalf of Patty Hajdu, federal Minister of Jobs and Families and Minister responsible for FedNor. 
“In Greater Sudbury, mining isn’t just an industry – it’s part of who we are,” Lapointe, a Liberal MP, said in a release. “By investing in Cambrian College’s Centre for Smart Mining, we’re helping to ensure that our community remains at the forefront of innovation, sustainability, and opportunity.” The investment will allow the Centre for Smart Mining to scale up its research and training services to meet growing demand in the mining technology sector. Over the course of the project, the Centre will collaborate with up to 145 small- and medium-sized enterprises, providing access to advanced equipment, technical expertise, and customized upskilling programs in areas such as automation, artificial intelligence, and electric vehicle (EV) development. 

The Centre will also expand its research into EV powertrain testing and critical mineral extraction technologies, aligning with Canada’s clean economy goals.
The project will unfold in three phases, the federal government said: – Year 1: Focus on scaling operations, hiring staff, acquiring equipment, and expanding partnerships. 

– Year 2: Grow the research portfolio and enhance student training with certifications in key technical areas. 

– Year 3: Reach full operational capacity, delivering a wide range of services and pursuing long-term sustainability.
