Agnico Eagle training hundreds for careers in mining
Agnico Eagle is training hundreds for careers in mining and may even consider building housing for them if the province can see their way to invest in the associated infrastructure.Those were some big takeaways from the company’s vice president for Ontario at the State of Mining luncheon at the Porcupine Dante Club on Tuesday, Nov. 12.

The lunch series where mining executives provide an update on their operations takes place three to four times a year at the popular event venue in Timmins and is hosted by the Timmins Chamber of Commerce.

Agnico Eagle is training 200 people from three First Nations this year for careers in mining: Taykwa Tagamou, Matachewan, and Moose Cree.

“Every person that participates in this program will get a job,” Leite said.

“We’re focusing on entry-level pipeline with apprentice, open pit and new operators,” Leite said.The program, which is funded by the Ontario Skills Development Fund, exceeded its original target of 150 candidates between the ages of 18 to their early 30s.
